{"id":19,"date":"2013-02-12T08:49:34","date_gmt":"2013-02-12T08:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eoh2013.aua.am\/?page_id=19"},"modified":"2013-06-13T12:49:26","modified_gmt":"2013-06-13T12:49:26","slug":"site-visit","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/eoh2013.aua.am\/site-visit\/","title":{"rendered":"Site Visit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Mining Areas\" src=\"https:\/\/eoh2013.aua.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Mining-Areas-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AUA Leads International Experts on Trip to Mining Towns of Aghtala and Alaverdi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On\u00a0April 25<\/strong>\u00a0the American University of Armenia led a group of international experts on a scientific trip to observe local conditions and environmental concerns in two mining communities in northern Armenia.<\/p>\n<p>The group visited the smelter town of Alaverdi and the tailing ponds in Aghtala \u2013 both are areas where a research team from AUA School of Public Health (SPH) and AUA Acopian Center for the Environment (ACE) recently found indications of heavy metal contamination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur colleagues from different countries had the opportunity to observe the general situation in those communities and share their expert opinion on how things could be improved to better protect the health of the people living in those communities,\u201d said SPH Associate Dean Dr. Varduhi Petrosyan, who led the expedition to the mining communities.<\/p>\n<p>The trip followed a two-day scientific symposium on\u00a0April 22-23\u00a0focusing on the impact of mining and construction on community and worker health in Armenia and other transitional economies.
